Reducing School Zone Pedestrian Accidents
There are several ways in which children get to school, such as by car, bus, bicycle or walking. Unfortunately accidents occur with each mode of transportation — injuring and even killing innocent children attempting to attend school that day.
In order to focus on the safety of kids walking to school, October 7, 2015 is known as Walk to School Day. Because many children walk to school — whether it is a block or a couple miles away, it is important that children know how to safely walk to school, including:
- Walk with an adult whenever possible
- Walk with other children to be more visible
- Look both ways before crossing the street
- Cross the street only in crosswalks
- Always follow the pedestrian signals if crossing at an intersection with traffic lights
Not only is it important that children are reminded of these aforementioned safety tips, but it is the goal of Walk to School Day to remind parents and drivers to help reduce traffic congestion and speeds near schools. When less cars are traveling through school zones, there should be fewer car and pedestrian accidents.
In addition, Walk to School Day also sheds light on the many benefits of walking and encourages communities to come together to promote healthier habits. Also, this day is a way to help raise awareness for dangerous streets and where improvements should be made.
