11 Spinal Cord Symptoms To be Aware Of After A Florida Car Crash

Sometimes car accidents in Fort Lauderdale and throughout Florida produce catastrophic results, causing the drivers’ or passengers’ bodies to be thrown, jolted, compressed or twisted abnormally.  If direct damage like this occurs, a spinal cord injury may be the result.

Spinal cord injuries are somewhat common yet serious injuries that result from car accidents.  When a spinal cord is damaged or compressed, swelling inside as well as outside the spinal cord can occur and fluid accumulation and bleeding can also cause damage to the spinal cord.

Victims of spinal cord injury may feel a loss of sensation or weakness below the injury.  For example, if the injury occurred in the neck, the middle of the body as well as arms and legs could be affected. Symptoms of a spinal cord injury may include:

  1. Numbness
  2. Weakness
  3. Paralysis
  4. Pain
  5. Sensory loss
  6. Bladder control issues and spasms
  7. Trouble breathing
  8. Spasticity (increase in muscle tone)
  9. Trouble maintaining normal body temperature
  10. Trouble maintaining blood pressure
  11. Abnormal sweating

Spinal injuries typically occur to the neck, lower back, or chest. The severity of the injury and the symptoms one may experience can be different depending upon where the location of the injury is and if the entire cord is partially or severely injured.

If you believe you have experienced any one of these symptoms after a South Florida car accident, you need to go to the hospital for medical care.  If the doctors suspect a spinal cord injury, they may take a spine x-ray, MRI or CT scan to determine the extent of the damage. Often times surgery is needed to remove fluid that accumulated on the spinal cord. Other surgeries may be to remove fragments of bone or fuse broken spinal bones together.

If you were injured in a Florida car crash, truck accident or motorcycle accident due to someone else’s negligence, you should not have to pay for their mistakes.  Focus on recovering from your injuries and allow a lawyer to deal with the insurance companies and negligent party on your behalf.  If you have suffered a spinal cord injury, you most likely need financial compensation for physical therapy, rehabilitation, occupational therapy, and more.
