Florida SCHIZOPHRENIA Patients Eligible For Social Security Benefits

Most people don’t realize that schizophrenia is a disease of the brain.

For centuries, confusion has plagued individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia, as well as those who live with and around them. For the patient, truth is often completely skewed, although seemingly they are totally convinced that it is reality.  Most individuals are diagnosed during their 20’s and 30’s, and rarely after the age of 45.  Florida residents struggling to cope with schizophrenia, soon realize how difficult it is to manage their personal and professional life.

Schizophrenia Symptoms

  • Delusions – beliefs not based on reality
  • Difficulty making sense of information
  • Hallucinations – see and hear things that don’t exist
  • Thought disorder – difficulty making sense when they speak
  • Disorganized behavior – inappropriately silly or agitated
  • Memory and attention difficulties
  • Lose interest in day to day activities
  • Lacking emotion
  • Isolation, social withdrawal
  • Poor personal hygiene

Broward County individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia are often unaware of their symptoms, and hence rarely seek help and assistance. Typically, a friend or family member will recognize the problematic behaviors and their concern will lead to action.

For schizophrenics, their livelihood is often at risk.  Suicidal thoughts, self injury, homelessness, and drug abuse are very common. Ultimately, it becomes impossible for a schizophrenic to keep a job. For these reasons, it is essential that they receive emotional and financial support, especially when it’s beyond their ability to ask for help.

How to Receive Social Security for Schizophrenia

Even with excellent South Florida medical and psychological treatment, schizophrenics may find themselves unable to work. The SSA, Social Security Administration, does offer disability benefits to individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia. However, to meet the SSA’s criteria, a person must have medical records that can prove:

  1. Schizophrenia lasted more than 2 years.
  2. Negative impact on employment.
  3. Inability to function without outside support.
  4. Schizophrenic symptoms listed above must be constant or cause intermittent disturbance in daily living.
  5. Episodes of Decompensation – setbacks when the schizophrenic individual no longer responds to treatment.

It is essential that during each and every episode, the individual receives medical treatment to provide documentation to the Social Security Administration. To be diagnosed with schizophrenia and take medication is not enough to qualify for Social Security disability benefits. However, if an individual does have schizophrenia, it is likely that he or she will qualify without the assistance of quality legal advice.
