ADHD-Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, And Social Security

ADHD in South Florida is one of those topics almost everyone has something to say about. That’s because over 3 million children in America are currently being medicated for ADHD related symptoms. This is an issue that is affecting every household, in one way or another. Americans are concerned, and rightfully so.

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, termed ADHD, is a neurological disorder that doesn’t only affect children. Most people don’t realize that ADHD is a lifelong issue that affects twice as many adults.

What is ADHD?

Don’t we all misplace our keys, forget doctor appointments, or get overly excited sometimes? The answer is yes, sometimes. Individuals diagnosed with ADHD experience those symptoms almost all of the time. So, if people with ADHD do in fact remember where they put their wallet, or arrive to an appointment on time, that is usually the exception, not the rule.

ADHD in the Workplace

Adults diagnosed with ADHD are keenly aware of how their disorder affects their job performance. Often, they struggle with reaching deadlines, organizing, paying attention, overlooking important details, and controlling their emotions. Essentially, the odds are against ADHD individuals who want to keep a job. That’s not to say that therapy, medication, and work environment cannot help people who are determined to find accommodations to help them be successful.

However, typically, most ADHD adults find it hard to keep a job for very long. In that case, it may become essential for an individual to apply for some sort of Social Security Disability Insurance. The Social Security Administration (SSA) does award disability benefits to people diagnosed with ADHD.

What Social Security Needs to Know

To qualify for Social Security benefits, you will need to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you are essentially unable to continue working. The SSA will require that you show proof of receiving medical treatment from a psychologist or psychiatrist, while taking required medications.

If SSA determines that the ADHD individual is dealing with severe symptoms impeding his/her work, they will recommend an individualized assessment recommending the type of work that they believe the individual is capable of doing.

An experienced South Florida Social Security disability attorney can help with the paperwork in order to submit your claim.
