Chronic Pain Patients: How To Qualify For Florida Social Security Benefits

Floridians who suffer from chronic pain are left with a constant nagging discomfort that won’t go way. If you have been diagnosed by your doctor with chronic pain that has lasted for over 12 months and have found it difficult to work, then you may likely qualify for Social Security disability benefits.

While an individual may be convinced of the severity of their pain and discomfort, the condition will need to support itself with a certain amount of medical data. For example, a claimant cannot merely qualify for benefits based on the degree of the severity of their symptoms, but rather on the degree of proof that they can provide from their medical records.

Chronic Pain Social Security Claimants: What Will I Need?

The Social Security Administration (SSA) will require the following criteria be met in order to receive benefits for chronic pain.

  1. “Medically determinable mental or physical impairment”- medical evidence is required including your physical exams, lab tests, x-rays, and objective account of symptoms.

  2. Medical records must prove that chronic pain has lasted for at least 12 months. It is essential to provide repeated diagnosis from multiple doctors over the course of one year.

According to the SSA, the following conditions that cause chronic pain are automatic qualifiers to receive Social Security benefits in Florida.

  • Inflammatory Arthritis
  • Neurological Disorders
  • Somatoform Disorders

The SSA also considers the following diagnosis as probable causes of chronic pain.

  • Back Injury
  • Chronic Renal Disease
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Some people who have suffered chronic pain don’t realize that they may qualify for Social Security benefits. It is vital that chronic pain claimants seek expert advice from a qualified Broward County Social Security Attorney.
