Common Fall Injuries That Result In Florida Workers’ Comp

When a Broward County employee is hurt so badly that he or she is forced to take time off work in order to recover, then companies often become responsible to compensate the injured victim for absorbent costs.

The Department of Labor (DOL) recently released a report which revealed which types of worker’s compensation claims are most prevalent. According to the study, the following injuries on the job have the greatest impact on industrial insurance premiums paid by employers.

Most Prevalent Work Injuries

  1. Getting Caught.  When an employee is caught in/under/between a piece of machinery, then severe injuries result from the body being crushed, pinched, or squeezed.

  2. Falls from Elevation. If employees fall from an elevated surface, such as a ladder or roof, then they often face seriously injuries, possibly paralysis or death.

  3. Falls at Ground Level. Employees frequently fall on a flat surface, or slip and trip at ground level. Fall accidents are known to cause serious and costly injuries.

  4. Struck Against. An employee may be hit by a moving or flying object.

  5. Motor Vehicle Accident. Employees who drive as part of their job can become injured in a crash.

  6. Lower Musculoskeletal Injuries. Knee, ankle, and foot injuries result from work.

  7. Upper Musculoskeletal Injuries. Neck, back, and arm injuries result from work.

Aside from caught in machinery, fall accidents rank as both the second and third leading cause of serious injuries that occur on the job. Common fall accidents frequently include spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, paralysis, torn ligaments, and broken bones.  Fall victims may become severely disabled or incur injuries that force them to take off time from work.

Florida employees who fall at work and become injured are eligible for Florida worker’s compensation benefits. Worker’s compensation is a system whereby an employer must pay, or provide insurance to pay, the lost wages and medical expenses of an employee who is injured on the job.
