Harmful Effects Of Chlorine Over-Exposure

While chlorine keeps your pool water sparkling clean, the effects of too much chlorine can be devastating. Here are some of the short and long-term health effects you can experience from chlorine exposure.

  • Short-term health effects can occur while you are swimming or shortly after. Moreover, the danger is not only limited to swimmers themselves, as side effects can also occur in individuals who have merely inhaled chlorine vapors or made contact with chlorinated water on their skin or in their eyes. The side effects may be more severe if chlorine is handled in its undiluted form.

  • Some of the most common short-term health effects of too much chlorine include vomiting and nausea. Some exposure victims will experience a burning sensation in their eyes, throat, or skin. Others may experience chest pain or shortness of breath. Additional symptoms include eye irritation, a bloody nose, coughing or wheezing, and the buildup of fluid in the lungs.

  • Individuals who have spent a great deal of time around chlorine, such as professional swimmers, lifeguards, and coaches, may be at particular risk for long-term health effects due to chlorine exposure.

  • Chlorine exposure has been shown to lead to lung problems, such as bronchitis or asthma. This is a particular concern for those who have spent a lot of time near indoor pools where the chlorine is concentrated in the air. Long-term exposure can also lead to tooth corrosion. Frequent swimmers may have an increased risk of developing some types of cancer.

If you believe that you may have experienced one of these health effects as a result of chlorine exposure, please review the information on our toxic chemicals page and contact the Law Offices of David M. Benenfeld P.A to learn more about your legal rights.
