How To Choose A Nursing Home That Isn’t On Florida’s Watch List

It is not an easy decision to put your elderly mother or father in a nursing home. However, once the decision is made, the next decision to make is: Which one? Choosing a nursing home for your loved is a difficult one. Sadly, it is such a hard decision because many nursing homes don’t take care of their residents like they should.

When placing your mother or father into the hands of a nursing home, you want to know he or she will be taken care of and not abused or neglected. This is why it is important that you spend time doing proper research and picking the right nursing home so that you don’t choose one that is on the state’s “Watch List”.

While you may assume there cannot be many nursing homes on this list, think again. Families for Better Care discovered that one in five nursing homes in Florida is, in fact, on this list. Unfortunately, many families either don’t search for this information or don’t know how to access the list. As a result, many families end up placing their elderly relatives in one of the nursing homes on the state’s Watch List.

What is the Watch List?

When a facility has not met the state’s standards or does not make necessary corrections in a timely manner, the home is placed on the Watch List. Sometimes the reason a home is placed on the list occurs from food handling concerns; however, other homes are put on the list for physical and sexual abuse claims. When a home poses a threat to residents, inspectors place the home on the Watch List.

Some nursing homes in our area that have been placed on the Watch List in the past several years include:

  • Covenant Village Care Center in Plantation
  • Manorcare Health Services in Plantation
  • Manor Oaks Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Fort Lauderdale

There are many more nursing homes in Florida that have been placed on the Watch List. If you are looking for a nursing home for your aging parent, make sure you do your research. You can view the other nursing homes on the list by clicking here. In addition to looking at the homes on the Watch List, you should also visit the homes you are considering as sights, smells and sounds can help you pick the right home for your loved one.

Even though thorough research will reduce the chances of your loved one being a victim of nursing home abuse and neglect, you should call a nursing home abuse attorney in Fort Lauderdale if you suspect your relative has been abused or neglected.
