South Florida residents diagnosed with kidney failure also known as renal failure are dealing with several forms of loss. - Ongoing Dialysis
- High Creatine Levels
- Kidney Transplantation
- Continuous Hemodialysis (artificial kidney machine)
Social Security Criteria for Other Kidney Related Problems
Nephrotic Syndrome is a group of kidney diseases that produce too much protein in the urine and edema. In order to qualify for Social Security benefits in Florida under this category, the individual must have severe edema for at least three months including either: low serum albumin levels in addition to moderately high protein in urine, or extremely high levels of protein in the urine.
Social Security Criteria for Kidney Transplantation
South Florida Social Security automatically awards benefits for 12 months if an individual has had a kidney transplant. Continued benefits will be based on the remaining impairments post-surgery.
If the kidney transplant recipient has complications following the surgery, such as episodes of kidney rejection, renal infection, treatment side effects, or other infections, they may qualify for further benefits. If the symptoms disappear or decrease, the SSA will determine if benefits will continue.
Kidney Failure Limitations
In the case that an individual has one form or another of kidney failure, but does not meet the qualifications listed above, the Social Security Administration will determine if the person is limited in his/her ability to work.
