Stay Safe This Summer By Avoiding 5 Common Mistakes

ImageThe summer is an ideal time to get outside and enjoy the fresh air and warm weather. Unfortunately, summer is also a time when a lot of people get injured because of more physical activity. No matter what you do this summer, use these summer safety tips to help make sure you avoid the five most common orthopedic injuries of the season.

  1. Wear wrist protectors if you choose to do outdoor activities where you move quickly and could fall. Examples including using roller skates or roller blades, riding a bicycle or even skateboarding. Severe impact on the wrists can result in a fracture or break that will take months to heal and be painful in the process.

  2. Avoid diving in shallow water. Swimming is a summer activity that many people love, but diving into water that is too shallow can result in serious neck injuries if you hit your head or have to turn your head to avoid the bottom of a pool or surface.

  3. Don’t play sports that put a lot of strain on certain joints too frequently. For example, golf tends to put a lot of stress on the elbows, particularly the elbow that takes the force of back swing.

  4. Wear proper shoes if you choose to do outdoor activities like rock climbing or hiking. These activities can put a lot of stress and strain on your ankles and if you slip you could easily sprain or break an ankle while away from home.

  5. Don’t overdo high impact sports. Mix up sports that put a lot of stress on your knees like tennis, basketball or long distance running with low impact sports like lap swimming or water aerobics.
